Contact Info: Anne Hennessy,
Important Dates:

  • March 9th until March 25th – Librarians select titles in their specialties
  • March 30th until April 15th – Librarians score titles and pick the Essential Purchase Titles in their specialties. (However, the system will notify librarians to begin scoring in a specialty as soon as all of the librarians have made their selections in that specialty, so some specialties are done in a much shorter time frame.)

Core Title Selection Process
Scope: The 2012 edition of DCT covers 121 specialties in

  • Clinical Medicine
  • Nursing
  • Basic Science
  • Allied Health
  • Other Associated Disciplines

Audience: Doody’s Core Titles is aimed primarily at medical, nursing, and allied health librarians around the world who are charged with making the book buying decisions for their libraries within budget guidelines.
Definition: A core title is a book or software title that represents essential knowledge needed by professionals or students in a given discipline and is highly recommended for the collection of a library that serves health sciences professionals. By definition the list of core titles in any specialty should not change dramatically each year, but the list must be updated to reflect new editions and new titles and to eliminate out-of-print and outdated titles.
Selectors: More than 200 professionals participated in the selection of the titles appearing in last year’s edition of Doody’s Core Titles, 95 Content Specialists and 115 collection development medical librarians who voluntarily served as Librarian Selectors.
Process: A four-step process results in the selection of the titles appearing on the Doody’s Core Titles list. All selection and scoring processes take place online.
1) Content Specialists in each of the 121 specialties made initial selections of core titles for each specialty (going on now).
2) A panel of up to three Librarian Selectors in each specialty review the selections made by the Content Specialist and can add titles to the list.
3) Librarians score each title on the final list, rating each one on a scale of 0 – 3 on five different key collection development criteria.
4) Librarians indicate which titles in each specialty are Essential Purchase Titles. Essential Purchase Titles are defined as those titles recommended for purchase by a small medical library with a limited annual book-buying budget.
Resources: To assist Librarians in their responsibilities and to make

  • the selection and scoring process as convenient and time-efficient as possible, the web-based tools built for the selection process include access to these information sources:
  • the titles that appeared on the 2011 Edition of Doody’s Core Titles
  • access to an aggregated database of all titles and reviews in Doody’s Book Review Service
  • the web sites of the three major medical book distributors,, Google

AHIP Points: Librarian Selectors are eligible for 3 AHIP points per year for working on Doody’s Core Titles. (Full details available at
