Tammy Mays will be leaving her position as the Consumer Health Coordinator, GMR, on August 16. She is excited and honored to be accepted in the University of Wisconsin at Madison’s PhD program and a recipient of the ALA Spectrum Doctoral Fellowship.
Tammy has been the Consumer Health Coordinator for the NN/LM GMR for the past six years. Prior to joining the GMR, Tammy was an Associate Fellow (1997-1998) at the National Library of Medicine in Bethesda, Maryland. After completing the Associate Fellowship program, Tammy relocated to Wisconsin, where she was the Outreach Coordinator for two years at the University of Wisconsin-Madison Health Sciences Libraries.
During her time with at the GMR, her contributions include:

She has trained public librarians, consumers, and health professional to search NLM’s consumer health products and services. She served on the Web-STOC Advisory Committee and the Outreach Evaluation Resource Center (OERC) review team (with joy).
Tammy was able to make available the 4 consumer health workshops for the public libraries on the national Web site: and facilitated a face to face in Chicago with the other consumer health coordinators and other RML staff to receive training from the author, Jo-Ann Benedetti.

The newly gained knowledge and skills from participating in the Institute resulted in the transfer of the, Nursing on the ‘Net: Health Care Resources You Can Use, a face-to-face MLA continuing education course to a Web-based environment. She is currently teaching the two-week course using UIC’s Blackboard to 33 medical librarians around the US.
Most recently Tammy was the lead on conducting two focus groups with local community-based organization representatives. The purpose of the 90-minute session was to gather local perspectives on health information needs of community-based organizations and how the NN/LM GMR can help with those health information needs.
You will continue to see her at MLA. She is the incoming chair-elect for CAPHIS and is serving on the National Program Committee for MLA 2008.
Congratulations and Best Wishes, Tammy!
